Song History: Robert Lowry was a gifted songwriter who interested himself in music from the time he was a young child. Although his passion was preaching and he originally considered music as merely a recreation, he nonetheless went on to leave an astounding musical legacy. In addition to editing many volumes of Sunday school music, Robert Lowry wrote such well-loved hymns as “Nothing But the Blood,” “Shall We Gather at the River,” “I Need Thee Every Hour,” and “We’re Marching to Zion.”
